Closing a social media account is not a sign of failure but a strategic decision. It may be determined that your channel does not meet a unique need, competes with other channels, or is not staffed adequately to maintain a consistent social presence.

  1. Review social media guidelines and Social Media Strategy Worksheet to discern whether your social media channel is necessary to achieve your area’s marketing goals.
  2. Discuss with supervisor, MarComm area leader, and social team. Consider ways to collaborate with other areas or use other communication vehicles to share messages and achieve goals.
  3. Archive any relevant content or metrics.
  4. Close the channel, and alert your MarComm area leader or the central social team, so your channel can be removed from relevant directories.
