Thank you for inquiring about media releases and filming notices for LMU photography and video. To avert legal action against the university and minimize the risk of potential damages, we adhere to the following guidelines and standards, and we advise our clients and colleagues to do the same:
- If your project involves photography or video of minors (persons under the age of 18 years old), you must obtain a signed media release from the minor’s parent or guardian. Before using the image or likeness of a minor in any promotional capacity — whether the image will be featured on one of LMU’s owned media channels (university website, social media, campus signage, etc.); or in paid, external advertising (print or digital ads, billboards, external light pole banners, commercials, etc.) — you must obtain a signed release. There are no exceptions.
- To be featured in a paid, external advertising campaign, photography or video using a person’s image or likeness also requires a signed media release from the person featured. There are no exceptions.
- Media releases are granted by project, not by person. For example, if you are portraying the same person’s image in two different advertising campaigns, that person must sign a media release for each campaign.
- When capturing photography or video at an LMU-hosted event or program that is intended for use on one or more of the university’s owned media channels (university website, social media, campus signage, print collateral, etc.), a notice of filming and photography is required in at least all of the following tactics that apply:
- Invitations (both print and digital)
- Event tickets
- Emailed event confirmations and reminders
- Event or program websites
- Digital displays, screens, projections, and/or presentations
- Temporary physical signage placed in the vicinity of the event or program
- View LMU’s official notice of filming. Please use this copy verbatim and do not attempt to shorten it or write your own version.
